Returning to My Roots: Working with Mainframe and IBM AS/400 at Terrafix Geosynthetics

Technology has a way of coming full circle.

During my time at Terrafix Geosynthetics, I had the opportunity to reconnect with technologies that played an important role in my early IT career—IBM Mainframe and IBM AS/400 (IBM i). While many people associate these platforms with the past, they continue to power mission-critical operations for organizations around the world, proving that reliability and stability never go out of style.

As part of my responsibilities supporting warehouse and logistics operations, I gained hands-on experience navigating enterprise systems that relied on both mainframe access and the IBM AS/400 environment. From managing inventory transactions and warehouse processes to supporting shipping and receiving operations, these systems demonstrated why they remain trusted platforms in manufacturing and supply chain environments.

One of the highlights of my experience was receiving specialized training on the organization’s mainframe environment. It was an excellent opportunity to deepen my understanding of enterprise workflows, system access, and the integration between legacy platforms and modern warehouse management solutions. Working alongside experienced professionals reinforced the importance of knowledge sharing and continuous learning in the IT industry.

This experience also reminded me that successful technology professionals aren’t defined by the newest programming language or cloud platform they know. The most valuable skill is adaptability. Whether supporting Microsoft Azure, cloud infrastructure, enterprise applications, or decades-old mainframe systems, the ability to learn quickly and understand business processes remains essential.

IBM AS/400 (IBM i) continues to impress me with its stability, integrated architecture, and reputation for handling business-critical workloads with remarkable reliability. Likewise, mainframe systems remain the backbone of countless industries, processing enormous volumes of transactions every day with exceptional security and performance.

Every new role presents an opportunity to expand technical knowledge, and my time at Terrafix was no exception. It allowed me to strengthen my understanding of enterprise logistics, warehouse management, and the technologies that quietly keep businesses running behind the scenes.

As I move forward in my career, I appreciate having added another chapter to my professional journey—one that blended modern operational practices with proven enterprise technologies. Experiences like these serve as a reminder that in IT, learning never stops, and every system has something valuable to teach.

Thank you, Terrafix Geosynthetics, for the opportunity to learn, contribute, and reconnect with technologies that continue to stand the test of time.
